To provide additional electric service to the rapidly expanding UNC campus, a new substation was required. The only site that met the location requirements was situated on a small site between an existing four-story parking garage and student apartments. The site had very limited access and a forty-foot difference in elevation from the front to the back of the site.

Major utilities and a 72" storm drain were also located on the site. In order to provide an adequate platform for the substation and to provide an aesthetically acceptable project, a series of concrete walls designed to match the garage architecture and extensive site grading created a facility that met the goals of the Power Company and the visual and functional requirements of the University.
