In 1995, Applegate Architects was selected by the U.S. Navy to design the
AIMD (Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Dept.) facility at MCAS, Cherry Point.
This facility was designed to support the intermediate level maintenance of
twelve FA/18 squadrons, which were to be relocated from Cecil Field, FL. Following
the completion of the design work for this project, the Cecil Field FA/18's
were redirected to Oceana, VA.
The AIMD facility, which we designed for MCAS, Cherry Point, includes every
type of aircraft component and aircraft system used in the maintenance and
repair of military and commercial aircraft. The 250,000 square foot facility
includes more than 30 individual shops, each specifically designed for the
training of personnel, and the maintenance of a component or process related
to the care and feeding of the FA/18 aircraft.
The AIMD facility also included more than 50 acres of site development, all
utility infrastructure systems, and environmental support systems.
